What is Rotational Molding?
Rotational molding (referred to as rotomolding) is an advanced manufacturing process used for of making hollow plastic parts and products. The hollow parts are produced by filling a pre-constructed closed mold with powder polymer (plastic) material. The mold is then heated and rotated along two axes; the hot mold melts the polymer while the rotation forces the resulting liquid resin to take the shape of the mold. The hot mold is then cooled as it continues to rotate; this cooling process creates an even coating of cured plastic along the inside of the mold walls.
When everything is melted, rotated, cooled, and cured, the result is a single, seamless, hardened piece that can act as a stand-alone product or a supporting component for something more complex.
The Benefits of Rotomolding
- Relatively inexpensive
- Capable of making complex shapes
- Single-piece product design — no seams
- Pressure-free manufacturing process — no high-pressure hydraulic equipment is used
- Increased durability — consistency across wall thicknesses with thicker corners
- Production flexibility — molded-in threads, handles, hardware inserts, logos, wording, textures, and colors are all possible
- Corrosion and chemical-resistant
- Limited material waste
- No size or shape limitations
Plastic Mold Development
Before rotational molding production can take place a precision mold needs to be created. Advanced Plastics Rotomolding can make that mold. We can truly be your single-source partner for every stage of production — ensuring a more sound product.
When it comes to mold development we take the time to fully understand your product — what it is, what it is meant for, the size, how it will be used, and more. From there we rely on our own in-house mold making technicians, and if needed, will pull-in outside sources to ensure the best mold possible.
As a truly flexible mold maker, Advanced Plastics Rotomolding can fabricate aluminum or steel molds from sheet or cast applications. With customization always at the forefront, we can create molds that allow for engravings and decals, such as logos, wording, and decorative features.
The final product will only be as good as the mold that formed it, so be sure to partner with us for all your rotational mold development needs. We produce long-lasting molds proven to produce quality plastic products. Contact us to get started.
Color Matching
Like with all products, the final color is important for brand recognition or to meet safety requirements. But unlike other manufacturing processes where the color is only applied during the finishing stage, in the world of rotomolding the inclusion of color is considered during the first stages of production. The benefit here is that the final color is evenly blended throughout the entire product — it is not just a top coating. Secondary top coatings can also be applied, allowing for a variety of finish appearances.
At Advanced Plastics Rotomolding we rely on sophisticated technologies and quality colorants to precisely match your brand’s color specifications.
